tribes and temples in orissa:

konark

the brahmin layer of hindu religion and culture was brought by the hindu-europeans (aryans) invadors, and expressed in the vedas, a collection of hymns and ritualistic formulas in sanskrit language (2nd millennium b.c.). the main vedic gods are not the three central deities of later hinduism (vishnu, shiva and the goddess) but another, exclusively male trinity, of persian origin: indra the sky god, agni the fire god, and surya the sun god.

only surya has temples dedicated to him, and the most impressive is in konark (13th century a.d.), one hour drive north of puri. its shape represents the sun chariot, with 12 wheels and 7 horses.

behind the main construction, a smaller temple of chana, goddess of shadow and wife of surya, provides a good example of fractal patterns in hindu temples.
