tribes and temples in orissa:

villages

some tribal settlements are just a few scattered huts.

others have more solid and decorated constructions.

at the village entrance, a sacred tree with stones around it. this is the place for sacrifices, rituals and acts of sorcery. many tribes are animist and follow shamanic practices, influenced in varying degrees by mainstream hinduism. it is said that the tree represents a mother goddess.

there are two main types of tribal villages. some have a "free" layout, different from one village to another. in others, the houses are arranged in two parallel coutinuous rows, with main doors facing inwards, to the common space around the midline.

in a double row construction, this is the potters village mentioned in a later page, technologies

another example of a double row: the village of bhatapur in rayagada district. on the midline are the village well and drainage canal.

the sacred tree of the village died some years ago, but it is still represented by the red and white consruction that was around it. on the right are sacrificial stones.
