tribes and temples in orissa:

shrines

besides the animism and spirit worship of the tribes, there are many shrines to the hindu gods. a typical features of orissa temples and shrines is statues of lions at the two sides of the entrance. here are some examples.

a roadside temple of shiva nataraj ("lord of dance")

a new temple, also to shiva, still in construction near a waterfall (on the right) and a cave shrine (on the left).

a sacred tulsi plant; the leaves are used in rituals.

carved on top of the rock in front of the waterfall, a small lingam (shiva phallus) decorated with flowers. to the left, two stone slabs with images of the goddess: laxmi on the left, durga on the right (same as the painted images outside the goddess temple where we had our puja on the road).

the cave to the left of the temple, under a rock painting of shiva. the trishul (trident) is one of shiva'e emblems.

a mineral hot water spring in taptapani, ganjam district. the main pool of the spring functions as a shrine, with a priest performing puja for visitors that can also take a bath there.
