integration of modern technology and traditional customs: a tractor decorated with religious symbols. compare to our own car, in the road.

communication technology: all over india, even in quite remote places, privately-leased STD lines ("subscriber trunc dial") provide reliable and reasonably-priced public communication, even international calls (ISD). the second picture is from the big market in rayagada district, shown in the second page: markets. this decentralised system, instead of a central public phone agency, is a nice example of "spinning wheel" economy in the indian environment. another STD yellow sign can be seen just outside the goddess' temple (the first picture) in the road.

all over india, in medium-size and bigger towns, there are also many computer schools and internet venues. two examples: a "cybernet" computer parlor in jeypore, and a temple tower behind a computer service company in bhubaneshwar.
